PHNOM PENH, March 25, 2026 (KPT) – Japan will help install a radar system to manage ship traffic at Cambodia’s Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, in a bid to modernise the facility and bolster the country’s economic growth.
Port director general Lou Kimchun told reporters on March 23 that construction of the radar antenna is due to begin in May and finish by September.
“Japan is helping to build a radar antenna to manage all ships entering our port. By September, this radar antenna project should be completed,” he said.
Lou described the port as a vital economic artery, stressing that modernisation is key to sustaining Cambodia’s expansion.
He also thanked Japan for three decades of support, ranging from infrastructure upgrades to management assistance and training.
The port handled more than 1.34 million containers in 2025, up over 12 percent from the previous year. Waterway transport in the first quarter of 2026 surged 38 percent compared with the same period in 2025.
