Health Ministry Confirms New Human Case of Bird Flu in Svay Rieng

PHNOM PENH, April 22, 2026 (KPT) — Ministry of Health of Cambodia (MoH) has confirmed a new human case of avian influenza in Svay Rieng province, officials said Tuesday.
A 66 year old woman from Trapeang Thkov village in Romduol district tested positive for the H5N1 virus on April 21, with confirmation by the National Institute of Public Health. She is being treated in hospital isolation.
Investigators reported sick and dead chickens in her village earlier this month, some of which had been used for cooking.
Rapid response teams have been deployed to trace contacts, distribute antiviral medication and conduct public health campaigns in the affected area.
Avian influenza H5N1 spreads mainly among birds but can infect humans through close contact with infected poultry.
Health officials warned the disease can be severe in humans and requires prompt medical care. While human to human transmission remains rare, the ministry cautioned the virus could evolve, raising the risk of wider spread.
Authorities urged vigilance, advising anyone with fever, cough or breathing difficulties to seek immediate medical attention and avoid crowded places.
Residents were reminded to follow hygiene and food safety measures, including avoiding contact with sick or dead birds, thoroughly cooking poultry and eggs, and washing hands regularly.
Officials said monitoring will continue and updates will be provided through official channels.
