Cambodia’s National Assembly to Debate Road Law Amendments on June 22

Phnom Penh, June 12, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s National Assembly will convene an extraordinary session on June 22 to debate and vote on amendments to the Road Law aimed at tightening controls on overloaded vehicles and safeguarding road infrastructure.
The move was approved by the Assembly’s Standing Committee during a meeting chaired Friday by President Khuon Sudary.
The draft amendments, submitted by the Royal Government, have already been reviewed by the relevant parliamentary commission.
On June 11, the commission on public works and transport, led by Nin Saphon, discussed the bill with Public Works and Transport Minister Peng Ponea and members of other commissions.
According to the ministry, the changes would set clearer technical standards for vehicle dimensions and introduce stricter inspection measures to curb overloading.
Officials say heavy trucks have caused extensive damage to Cambodia’s road network, driving up maintenance costs.
The government argues the reforms will improve road safety, reduce accidents, extend infrastructure lifespan and lower annual spending on repairs.
Following discussions, the commission and government representatives agreed on the draft’s content and legal form, paving the way for submission to the Standing Committee.
The bill will now be considered during the extraordinary sitting of the Assembly’s seventh legislature on June 22.
