Cambodia PM Urges Stronger ASEAN Unity Amid Global Tensions

CEBU, Philippines, May 9, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has called for greater ASEAN solidarity and resilience in the face of mounting geopolitical uncertainty, during the bloc’s 48th summit in the Philippines.
Speaking in Cebu on Thursday, Hun Manet said ASEAN must remain “a beacon of rules‑based multilateralism” and continue to promote peace, stability and dialogue in an increasingly fragmented global environment.
The summit, chaired by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together”, brought together regional leaders to discuss economic integration, energy and food security, and cooperation on shared challenges.
Hun Manet warned of spillover effects from tensions in the Middle East and other global crises, urging member states to strengthen coordination to safeguard regional peace and prosperity.
On economic integration, he pressed for faster implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026–2030, including progress on digital connectivity and trade talks with partners such as Canada and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
He also called for acceleration of regional energy projects, including the ASEAN Power Grid and Trans‑ASEAN Gas Pipeline, to bolster security and resilience.
Addressing food security, Hun Manet said ASEAN should reinforce regional food systems and fully utilize mechanisms such as the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve. Cambodia, he noted, stood ready to contribute as a food‑surplus country.

The Cambodian leader further highlighted concerns over the safety of ASEAN nationals affected by Middle East tensions, praising member states for providing mutual consular and emergency assistance.
At the close of the summit, ASEAN leaders adopted agreements and declarations covering amendments to the ASEAN Charter, maritime cooperation, the Middle East crisis, youth climate action and disaster response.
A retreat session also examined the impact of geopolitical tensions on oil supplies and prices, drawing lessons from recent international crises.
