Cambodia Urges Stronger UN Role In Peaceful Dispute Resolution Amid Border Tensions

NEW YORK, July 23, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has called for stronger United Nations action to uphold international law and promote the peaceful settlement of disputes, as border tensions with Thailand continue to displace thousands.

Speaking at the Security Council’s High‑Level Open Debate on “Strengthening the mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes: follow‑up to resolution 2788 (2025),” Cambodia’s Permanent Representative Chhea Keo urged renewed commitment to dialogue and diplomacy.

He recalled Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn’s May address reaffirming Cambodia’s adherence to peaceful resolution through respect for international law.

Keo outlined four priorities: bolstering the UN’s role in preventive diplomacy, ensuring disputes are settled in line with International Court of Justice rulings, reinforcing Security Council unity and impartiality, and addressing humanitarian impacts of Cambodia’s border dispute.

He said more than 20,000 civilians had been displaced and stressed the need to protect affected communities. “Borders and sovereignty should never be changed through force or faits accomplis,” he said.

Government spokesman Pen Bona on Thursday reiterated Cambodia’s rejection of any unilateral border line or territorial claim by Thailand.

“These activities do not affect Cambodia’s legal rights or its position regarding its international border,” he said, demanding Bangkok cease activities in areas “unlawfully occupied since 2025.” Ending them, he added, would reduce tensions, build trust and restore stability.

Cambodia’s appeal comes as the Security Council reviews mechanisms to strengthen peaceful dispute resolution under resolution 2788, adopted last year.

Phnom Penh insists international borders must not be altered through force and has urged the UN to play a more active role in preventing escalation.
