Cambodia Plans New Office Building, Infrastructure at Chrey Thom Border Gate
PHNOM PENH, Jan. 8, 2026, (KPT) — The Royal Government of Cambodia plans to construct an office building and supporting infrastructure at the Chrey Thom International Border Gate in Kandal province to boost cross-border trade.

The project was raised during a meeting on Jan. 8 at the Ministry of Economy and Finance to discuss the master plan for the new facilities. The session was chaired by H.E. Hean Sahib, Secretary of State and Chairman of the Committee for Compensation of Frozen Land Impacts, with participation from representatives of relevant ministries and institutions.
The meeting reviewed proposals for the master plan, which include designated areas for customs operations, cargo transfer facilities, offices for competent authorities, and landscaped gardens. The design will follow the model of joint inspection office buildings previously constructed at other international border gates.

Dr. Saphachar, who chaired the meeting, recommended a deeper study of the master plan and architectural layout with input from ministries and institutions under the coordination of the committee’s secretariat. He said the plan must be comprehensive, clear, and well-structured before submission to higher leadership for review and approval.
Cambodia–Vietnam trade surged to $10.4 billion in the first 11 months of 2025, a 12.7 percent increase from the same period last year, and is on track to reach $12 billion by year’s end. Vietnam stands as Cambodia’s third-largest trading partner and the leading partner within ASEAN. It also ranks fifth among foreign investors in Cambodia, while Cambodia has become Vietnam’s second-largest overseas investment destination.

Officials noted that the Chrey Thom–Long Binh border area is expected to transform into a population hub and eventually a city, in line with long-term development visions. Both national and international construction companies are already investing in the area.
