China urges ceasefire, dialogue in Cambodia–Thailand border dispute

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 24, 2025) — China has called for an immediate ceasefire and renewed dialogue between Cambodia and Thailand as Beijing steps up efforts to mediate escalating border tensions.

During a shuttle diplomacy mission to both countries, Deng Xijun, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs special envoy for Asian affairs, said halting hostilities and resolving the dispute peacefully must be the top priority.

He said China supports mediation efforts led by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including the role of its observer team in monitoring any ceasefire.

Deng added that Beijing is prepared to provide conditions and a platform for talks, urging both sides to “meet each other halfway,” rebuild trust and restore peace along the frontier.

Prime Minister Hun Manet earlier this week stressed the importance of respecting bilateral agreements and established mechanisms, calling them essential for a fair and lasting solution in line with international law.

He expressed gratitude to China and President Xi Jinping for what he described as Beijing’s leadership and personal efforts to help restore peace and maintain regional stability.

He said Cambodia has adhered to the ceasefire and remains committed to peaceful dispute settlement. He welcomed China’s involvement and thanked Beijing for pledging humanitarian assistance to communities affected by the fighting.
