PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Sept.18, 2025) — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has called on the United Nations to support the full implementation of a ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand following a brief military conflict in July.

Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai shake hands as they pose for photos following a press conference, on the day of mediation talks on the Thailand–Cambodia border conflict, in Putrajaya, Malaysia, July 28, 2025.

In a formal letter dated September 17 and addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet outlined the events of the border clash, which began on July 24 and ended with a ceasefire on July 28. He described the humanitarian consequences of the conflict and emphasized the importance of international engagement in preserving peace and stability.

“I truly hope that the above information will be received in a spirit of shared commitment to peace and constructive dialogue,” Hun Manet wrote. “Your continued leadership and engagement would be instrumental in preserving stability and fostering a peaceful resolution to the current situation.”

The letter also referenced ASEAN’s role in facilitating dialogue and reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to resolving disputes through diplomatic channels and adherence to international law.

Cambodia has urged Thailand to respect previously signed agreements, including the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding and recent border committee resolutions, and called for the unconditional release of 18 Cambodian soldiers reportedly detained by Thai forces.
