Beng Mealea’s New Bridge Enhances Visitor Safety Ahead of Khmer New Year

PHNOM PENH, April 7, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Beng Mealea Temple, one of the Angkor region’s most atmospheric sites, is welcoming visitors with improved safety and accessibility following the completion of a new wooden bridge, officials said Tuesday.

The APSARA National Authority said the 189-meter bridge was finished just in time for the Khmer New Year. Extending from the southern entrance toward the central complex, it allows visitors to explore the fragile ruins while helping preserve the temple’s delicate structure.

Project manager Puth Soth said the new bridge replaces an older structure that had deteriorated due to age and weather. Built to higher technical standards, it has been widened from 1.30 to 1.70 meters, easing visitor flow and providing space for sightseeing and photography.

The design was carefully adapted to Beng Mealea’s natural and historical character, blending into its forested surroundings while offering elevated views of collapsed stone blocks and tree-covered carvings.

Additional improvements, including new stairs and walkways, further enhance safety. Authorities said the upgrades safeguard the site while reinforcing its appeal as a major tourist attraction during the festive season.
