PHNOM PENH, May 10, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and Turkmenistan are exploring closer economic cooperation, including potential direct air links and energy collaboration, as both countries seek to expand trade and investment, the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce said Saturday.

The talks were held in Phnom Penh between Kith Meng, president of the Chamber and chair of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council Cambodia, and Turkmen Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Gurbanov during his official visit.

Gurbanov reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s interest in strengthening ties, citing its vast natural gas reserves and proposing exchanges of business delegations and studies on possible direct flights to boost tourism and trade. He also suggested signing a memorandum of understanding between the chambers of commerce of both countries to facilitate deeper engagement.

Meng welcomed the initiative, voicing support for the proposed chamber agreement and direct flights, saying improved connectivity would help strengthen tourism and reduce market barriers. He also proposed the establishment of a Turkmen embassy in Phnom Penh to further promote investment and cooperation.

Despite geographical distance, Meng said partnership could bring the two nations closer, pointing to Cambodia’s favorable business climate and growing economic potential. He identified tourism, agriculture, the digital economy and renewable energy as priority sectors for future collaboration.
