ASEAN Observers Visit Cambodia–Thailand Border Areas Amid Ceasefire Monitoring

PURSAT, June 8, 2026 (KPT) — An ASEAN observer mission has inspected several locations along the Cambodia–Thailand border to assess compliance with ceasefire agreements reached after last year’s border tensions, Cambodia’s Defence Ministry said Monday.

The ASEAN Observer Team, led by its Philippine head of mission, carried out inspections in Pursat province on June 6 at the request and with the support of Cambodia’s Liaison Group.

The mission visited the C1 area in Thma Da commune, Veal Veng district, to monitor implementation of measures outlined in a joint statement agreed by both countries.

Observers later travelled to the O’Phlouk Damrei area, which Cambodia says remains under Thai military control, describing it as territory attacked and occupied illegally.

At the Chey Chomneas border checkpoint, Cambodian officials alleged Thai troops carried out incursions, installed barbed wire and deployed shipping containers, preventing residents from returning home.

Cambodia reiterated it does not recognise any alteration of international boundaries through force or unilateral claims, urging Thailand to fully implement commitments under the December 2025 General Border Committee statement and the October 2025 peace agreement.

The Defence Ministry said the mission underscored the need to accelerate border demarcation through the Joint Boundary Commission to enable displaced families to return safely.

Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to existing agreements and pledged continued cooperation with ASEAN observers to promote transparency and confidence‑building along the frontier.
