PHNOM PENH, July 8, 2026 (AFP) – More than 639,000 tonnes of Cambodian milled rice worth US$367 million were exported in the first six months of 2026, driven by strong demand from the European Union, China and ASEAN markets, while shipments to the Philippines recorded a sharp increase, official data showed Wednesday.

The Cambodia Rice Federation said 639,319 tonnes were shipped through 60 companies to 64 destinations worldwide. The EU remained the largest market by value, importing 178,828 tonnes worth US$121.7 million across 32 countries. Exports to China and Hong Kong reached 170,483 tonnes worth US$99.7 million, while ASEAN markets absorbed 228,780 tonnes valued at US$98.9 million.

Federation president Lay Chhunhour said rice exports to the Philippines rose by about 70,000 tonnes, reflecting growing demand from one of Southeast Asia’s largest importers. He attributed the strong performance to favorable farming conditions, sufficient water supplies, expanded grain drying capacity and continued government support.

Fragrant rice accounted for nearly 60 percent of shipments, followed by long‑grain white rice at 22.6 percent and broken rice at 14.3 percent. Smaller volumes of parboiled, organic and other varieties were also exported.

In addition to milled rice, Cambodia exported 3.18 million tonnes of paddy rice to neighbouring countries during the same period, generating more than US$713 million.

The figures highlight the resilience of the rice sector and its role in supporting Cambodia’s trade competitiveness and rural livelihoods.
