PHNOM PENH, July 16, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and Laos have pledged to expand cooperation in labour, social security and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as the two neighbours mark 70 years of diplomatic relations, officials said Wednesday.

Labour Minister Heng Sour and newly appointed Lao Ambassador Sonexay Vannaxay reaffirmed the commitment during talks at the ministry. Sour said ties between the two countries had been strengthened by friendship, solidarity and mutual trust, particularly since the adoption of the 2023–2027 Action Plan for the Comprehensive and Long-Term Strategic Partnership.

He said the anniversary provided fresh momentum to deepen cooperation, highlighting TVET as a driver of growth and competitiveness. Sour urged exchanges of trainers and experts, partnerships between institutions and new memoranda of understanding to advance collaboration.

The minister voiced confidence that Sonexay’s mission would reinforce bilateral ties and stressed Cambodia’s readiness to work closely with Laos on shared challenges and sustainable development.

Sonexay said he was honoured to serve in Cambodia, praising the Kingdom’s cultural heritage and long-term vision under the Pentagonal Strategy – Phase I. He noted commemorative activities would be held in Phnom Penh and Vientiane, and commended Cambodia’s workforce and infrastructure development as key to economic growth.

The ambassador welcomed progress in relations and reaffirmed Laos’ commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership for mutual benefit.
