SIEM REAP, April 17, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s premier tourist hub Siem Reap welcomed more than 1.84 million visitors during the three-day Khmer New Year celebrations, underscoring a strong rebound in the country’s tourism sector, officials said Friday.

The provincial Department of Tourism reported that from April 14–16, a total of 1,842,430 tourists visited Siem Reap. Domestic visitors accounted for the overwhelming majority, with more than 1.83 million arrivals, while 5,438 were international tourists.

The surge was driven largely by the annual Siem Reap Sangkran festival, held April 13–16, which featured a wide range of cultural and entertainment activities. Religious ceremonies, art exhibitions, live performances and traditional games drew large crowds, while the highlight event—dragon boat and decorated boat races along the Siem Reap River—attracted thousands of spectators.

Beyond the festival, visitors explored the province’s renowned cultural and natural attractions, including the Angkor Wat temple complex, Phnom Kulen National Park and eco-tourism sites across the region.

Officials said the strong turnout reflects growing confidence in Cambodia as a safe and attractive destination, while highlighting the role of cultural events in revitalising domestic tourism and supporting local economies.

They added that the celebrations not only boosted hospitality and service industries but also reinforced Siem Reap’s position as a cultural capital, where heritage and modern festivities combine to draw both local and international audiences.
