Cambodia marks peaceful Khmer New Year celebrations, PM says

PHNOM PENH, April 17, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet said this year’s Khmer New Year festivities unfolded peacefully nationwide, with strong public participation helping preserve cultural traditions.
In a statement, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet described the celebrations as “filled with smiles,” highlighting traditional games, classical dances and family gatherings at homes, pagodas and public venues to welcome the New Year angel.
He thanked municipal and provincial authorities, ministries, task forces and the armed forces for ensuring safety and order for citizens and tourists.
The Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia, volunteers, sanitation workers and drivers were also praised for organising Sangkran events in Phnom Penh and the provinces.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said their efforts promoted Cambodian culture and strengthened national identity, while supporting organisers and participants.
He further commended armed forces stationed across the country for safeguarding sovereignty, and expressed appreciation for displaced citizens in temporary government shelters.
The premier urged holidaymakers returning to work to comply with traffic laws and prioritise safety.
Free city bus services in Phnom Penh will continue during the period to ease travel costs and support safe journeys, he added.
