PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct.20, 2025) — Cambodia’s Techo International Airport (TIA) will begin construction of a new 10-kilometer waterway connection with an estimated investment of $100 million, linking the airport’s southern zone to the Bassac River and the Techo Funan Canal, extending to the coastal city of Kep.

The project aims to transform TIA into a multimodal logistics hub integrating air, land, and water transport. The $2.3 billion airport was officially inaugurated on Oct. 20, 2025, under the patronage of Prime Minister Hun Manet.

To support rising cargo volumes, TIA will also develop a second cargo terminal and additional aircraft stands with a $50 million investment. The new terminal will span 40,000 square meters and enhance the airport’s role in freight handling and transshipment.

Dr. Pung Kheav Se, chairman of Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd. (CAIC), said the airport is being developed in three phases. Phase one will accommodate up to 13 million passengers annually, phase two up to 30 million, and phase three up to 50 million.

OCIC, a key development partner, has launched the Airport City project, which includes affordable housing for thousands of workers and a commercial center. The master plan also features residential zones, trade districts, an international exhibition center, factories, warehouses, and a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to promote manufacturing and exports via TIA.

A cultural park is also under construction to showcase Khmer heritage to domestic and international visitors.
