PHNOM PENH, June 26, 2026 (KPT) — The Royal Government of Cambodia has established an inter‑ministerial task force to coordinate film tourism and develop nighttime temple experiences, aiming to diversify attractions and strengthen the country’s appeal to international visitors.

Chaired by Tourism Minister Huot Hak, the task force will bring together ministries and institutions to facilitate film production in Cambodia while introducing night temple visits as a new cultural experience. Officials said the initiative reflects the government’s strategy to expand tourism products beyond traditional daytime tours.

Thourn Sinan, Chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia Chapter, welcomed the move, saying night temple visits would give tourists greater flexibility and enrich their experience of Cambodia’s heritage. He urged authorities to also promote sites outside Angkor, such as Phnom Kulen and traditional villages, while intensifying international marketing to boost competitiveness.

“The creation of new tourism products is essential to attracting more visitors and extending their stay,” Sinan said.

The Ministry of Tourism reported 1.5 million international arrivals in the first five months of 2026, down 47 percent from the same period last year. Officials expect the new task force to help diversify experiences, attract international film productions and support long‑term recovery.

The initiative comes as Cambodia gains global recognition for sustainability. U.S. News & World Report ranked the country number one worldwide for Sustainable Land and Natural Resource Management in 2026, citing its extensive protected areas, reforestation efforts and low‑carbon strategy.

Tourism arrivals have mirrored this progress. The ministry said 1.84 million international visitors arrived in the first quarter of 2026, up from 1.58 million a year earlier. China, Vietnam, Thailand and the United States were among the top source markets. Authorities forecast between 5.3 and 6.3 million arrivals this year, with eco‑tourism and night temple experiences expected to play a growing role.
