Cambodia Promotes Wellness Tourism Through Yoga as Part of Healthy Ageing and Tourism Growth Strategy
SIEM REAP, June 21, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia is stepping up efforts to develop wellness tourism as a key product, using yoga and health-focused travel experiences to promote healthy ageing, mental well-being, and sustainable tourism growth, officials said Sunday.
The initiative was highlighted during the 12th International Day of Yoga, celebrated at the Royal Residence Park in Siem Reap under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” The event was organized by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Embassy of India to Cambodia and several government institutions, with the approval of Prime Minister Hun Manet.

Tourism Minister Huot Hak and Indian Ambassador Vanlalvawna Bawitlung presided over the ceremony, which drew more than 500 participants, including government officials, students, residents, and international guests.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, the celebration not only promoted the health benefits of yoga but also supported Cambodia’s efforts to position itself as an attractive wellness tourism destination for both domestic and international travelers. Officials noted that wellness tourism is becoming a growing segment of the global travel industry, as more tourists seek destinations offering relaxation, preventive healthcare, stress reduction, and mental well-being.
The event also formed part of the ongoing Cambodia–India Tourism Year, aimed at strengthening tourism exchanges and people-to-people ties between the two countries. Ambassador Bawitlung said the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” reflects international recognition of yoga’s role in improving physical, mental, and emotional health. Yoga, originating in India, is now practiced worldwide and was endorsed by 177 countries in the United Nations resolution declaring June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.
Tourism officials said wellness tourism aligns with Cambodia’s broader strategy to diversify its offerings beyond cultural and heritage attractions. By promoting activities that support active and healthy lifestyles, Cambodia hopes to attract a growing market of travelers seeking holistic travel experiences.
The joint organization of the event underscored the strong partnership between Cambodia and India in tourism, culture, education, trade, and people-to-people exchanges, while showcasing the rich cultural heritage and tourism potential of both nations.
Cambodia has marked the International Day of Yoga annually since 2015, with the Indian Embassy working closely with government agencies, educational institutions, and local partners to promote yoga practice and healthy living across the Kingdom.
Following the Siem Reap celebration, the 12th International Day of Yoga was also scheduled in Phnom Penh on June 21 at the Techo Meas and Techo Yat Gardens along Chaktomuk Riverside Walk.
