PHNOM PENH, June 30, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian analysts say closer cooperation between the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) could further strengthen long‑term bilateral relations, extending beyond traditional state‑to‑state diplomacy.

The comments followed Senate President and CPP leader Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s official visit to China from June 25 to 27, during which he met President Xi Jinping and senior CPC officials.

Political analyst Kin Phea said party‑to‑party ties are significant because both organisations play leading roles in their respective political systems.

“The Communist Party of China leads the country, while the Cambodian People’s Party is Cambodia’s dominant political party,” he said.

“Strong relations between the two parties are reflected in the broader diplomatic relationship between the two countries.”

He noted Cambodia and China have maintained close relations for decades, dating back to the era of King Father Norodom Sihanouk, with successive governments continuing to deepen those ties.

Geopolitical analyst Gnel Rattha said Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s meetings with Xi and CPC leaders underscored the importance both sides attach to party‑to‑party relations.

He said the visit reinforced what both governments describe as an “ironclad friendship” and highlighted that cooperation extends beyond government institutions.

Rattha added that, despite Cambodia’s engagement with Western countries and Japan, the high‑level meetings signalled that China remains Phnom Penh’s principal strategic and economic partner.

Government spokesman Pen Bona said Samdech Techo’s visit reflected the determination of both countries to expand strategic cooperation.

Xi described the relationship as “solid as a rock,” recalling his 2025 state visit to Cambodia and efforts to build an “all‑weather Cambodia–China community with a shared future.”

CPP spokesman Chea Thyrith said the two parties signed a memorandum of understanding to expand dialogue and strengthen training for young party members.

Both sides pledged to deepen cooperation and support each other amid what they described as an increasingly complex global environment.
