PHNOM PENH, Feb 23, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian analysts have welcomed what they describe as growing US engagement in the country’s border tensions with Thailand, after President Donald Trump commented on recent clashes and met Prime Minister Hun Manet in Washington.

Political analyst Yang Peou said Trump “highly admires” Hun Manet, describing Cambodia’s approach to the dispute as consistent with its long-standing commitment to peaceful resolution.

He noted the prime minister’s participation in a “Board of Peace” event in Washington, involving around 20 countries, as a significant diplomatic step.

“This is the best chance for Cambodia to raise the border issue and to demonstrate that Cambodia is a peace-loving nation,” Peou said.

Trump referred to the clashes as “nasty fighting” during remarks on February 19, which Peou interpreted as evidence Washington was closely monitoring developments and supporting mediation.

He praised Trump’s role in encouraging dialogue, saying without mediation the violence could have had “serious consequences.”

Separately, Youk Chhang, director of the Documentation Center of Cambodia, said deeper US engagement could strengthen civil society exchanges and create broader opportunities across economic and political spheres.

Government spokesman Pen Bona said Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet’s mission to the US and Europe was part of a broader push to defend sovereignty amid border tensions.

The Ministry of Interior reported Sunday that about 90 percent of civilians displaced by recent clashes have returned home following the December 27 ceasefire agreement.
