Cambodia says ASEAN keeps high level focus on Thailand border dispute

PHNOM PENH, 13 February 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s government spokesman Pen Bona said ASEAN continues to give high level attention to resolving the border dispute with Thailand.
Speaking at his daily press briefing, Bona noted that Malaysia, during its 2025 ASEAN chairmanship, played an active mediating role that led to two ceasefire agreements and a joint peace statement, with support from the United States and participation from China. Malaysia also facilitated measures to reduce tensions along the frontier, he said.
He added that the Philippines, which assumed the ASEAN chairmanship in 2026, has shown strong commitment to mediation, including preparations to lead the ASEAN Observer Team tasked with monitoring the ceasefire.
Bona said foreign embassies and international organisations were closely watching what Cambodia describes as violations of its sovereignty by Thai forces, alleging they prevented tens of thousands of displaced civilians from returning home.
The comments came as Philippine armed forces chief General Romeo S. Brawner Jr. concluded a visit to Cambodia, pledging impartial leadership of the observer team and support for a peaceful resolution.
