Environment Ministry Warns E-Waste Emerging as Major Health, Environmental Threat
PHNOM PENH, Jan 24, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment has warned that electronic waste, or E-waste, is fast becoming a serious threat to public health and the environment, as discarded devices release toxic substances that contaminate soil, water and air.
E-waste — ranging from mobile phones and computers to televisions, batteries and household appliances — is surging worldwide amid rapid technological change and frequent upgrades, posing mounting challenges for safe disposal and management.

Officials said electronic devices contain hazardous materials including lead, mercury, cadmium, PVC plastic, brominated flame retardants, chromium, beryllium and dioxins.
When dumped in open areas or burned to extract metals, these substances seep into the ground and groundwater or are released into the atmosphere as toxic gases, damaging ecosystems and contributing to climate change.
The ministry highlighted grave health risks, particularly for workers handling E-waste without protective equipment and for communities living near dumping or burning sites.
Exposure to toxic chemicals can cause respiratory problems, skin diseases, organ damage, weakened immune systems and developmental issues in children. Pregnant women and children are especially vulnerable.
At the same time, officials noted that proper recycling can recover valuable materials such as gold, copper and silver, reducing the need for new mining and saving energy. The ministry urged responsible disposal, expanded recycling programs and greater awareness of repairing and reusing devices to minimize harm.
“E-waste is not ordinary trash but a global environmental and health challenge that requires careful management to protect natural resources and public wellbeing,” the ministry said in its statement.
