Cambodia Steps Up Action Against Open Burning, Plastic Waste to Safeguard Air Quality
PHNOM PENH, Jan 23, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment has intensified efforts to curb air pollution by targeting open burning of agricultural residues, forest undergrowth, solid waste and plastics.
Undersecretary of State Khvay Atitya said the ministry is working with institutions and local authorities to raise awareness and enforce measures in line with Government Circular No. 01 on preventing public air pollution.
National campaigns including “Today, I Do Not Use Plastic Bags,” “Clean Cambodia, Khmer Can Do It,” and “National Roads Without Plastic Bags” are encouraging citizens to reduce plastic use and stop waste burning.
The ministry is also publishing real-time air quality index data through its website, official Facebook page and the CSA SPA mobile app to ensure transparency and public monitoring.
Officials said Cambodia’s air quality remains at a good level, with no reported impacts on public health. Provincial authorities, including Pailin, have pledged continued cooperation to enforce measures and strengthen public awareness.
