PHNOM PENH, Jan 22, 2026 (KPT)— Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn has welcomed Flavio Bonetti as the newly appointed UNESCO representative to the country, underscoring the importance of continued cooperation with the UN agency.

Bonetti paid a courtesy call on Sokhonn at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Tuesday, after presenting his letter of credence.

Sokhonn congratulated Bonetti on his appointment, describing it as a reflection of Cambodia’s long-standing partnership with UNESCO.

He expressed appreciation for the organisation’s support in education, culture, environmental protection and heritage preservation.

The foreign minister highlighted UNESCO’s technical assistance in safeguarding the Preah Vihear Temple, a World Heritage site affected during past border tensions with Thailand.

He said Cambodia, having endured years of war and genocide, understood the value of peace and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with the agency.

Bonetti said he was honoured to take up his post and pledged to work closely with the government to support national development.

He stressed UNESCO’s continued commitment to improving education, promoting peace and sustainable development, and preserving cultural heritage.

Sokhonn concluded by reaffirming the ministry’s readiness to coordinate with relevant institutions to ensure the success of Bonetti’s mission in Cambodia.
