Cambodia coordinates ASEAN observers to inspect border after Thai attacks

PHNOM PENH, Jan 21, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has coordinated an ASEAN Observer Team to assess damage along its border with Thailand, following last month’s ceasefire agreement.

Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, spokeswoman for the Ministry of National Defence, said the Cambodian Liaison Group facilitated the mission on Wednesday morning in Battambang province’s Sampov Loun and Phnom Proek districts.

Observers inspected civilian sites and infrastructure, including homes and a referral hospital, which sustained heavy damage during Thai military attacks in December.

Socheata said Cambodia had provided full support to the team and stressed the importance of strengthening its mandate to verify and ensure implementation of the ceasefire, while promoting transparency and trust.

The defence ministry reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to agreements reached with Thailand, including the joint statement of the General Border Committee on December 27 and the peace declaration signed in October.

“These measures are intended to support a rapid return to normalcy, peace, stability and long term security along the border,” the ministry said.

Officials added that the government is keeping the public and media informed of developments regarding the border situation.
