Cambodia, Laos Deepen Parliamentary Ties Amid Push for Regional Peace and Cooperation
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Sept. 17, 2025) — Cambodia and Laos have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening parliamentary cooperation, pledging to deliver tangible and lasting benefits to their citizens through deeper legislative engagement.
On the sidelines of the 46th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Cambodian National Assembly President Khuon Sudary met with Lao Vice President Sounthone Xayachack to continue discussions initiated at the 6th World Summit of the Presidents of Parliament in Geneva on July 29.
Sudary underscored the importance of Cambodia’s relationship with Laos, describing it as “precious and invaluable”—a legacy built by previous generations of leaders. She emphasized that Laos remains a key neighbor in Cambodia’s foreign policy and a vital partner in regional stability.
During the meeting, Sudary presented Cambodia’s draft resolutions for AIPA, which include proposals to establish an AIPA Leaders’ Forum for inclusive dialogue, strengthen engagement with observer parliaments, and reinforce ASEAN centrality under Vision 2045.
She also reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to resolving its border dispute with Thailand peacefully through existing mechanisms.
Xayachack praised the strong cooperation between the two countries and voiced full support for Cambodia’s initiatives, calling them essential for regional peace. She noted that regular exchanges at all levels contribute to a “long-term comprehensive strategic partnership” that benefits both nations.
The two leaders agreed that parliamentary diplomacy plays a critical role in advancing bilateral ties and pledged to maintain momentum in legislative collaboration.
Sudary concluded by thanking Laos for its support in implementing the Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire, which took effect on July 28. She reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to transforming border areas into zones of “peace, stability, friendship, cooperation and development.”
