Pen Bona: Government details fuel subsidies, free travel for Khmer New Year

PHNOM PENH, April 13, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s government has rolled out fuel subsidies, tax cuts and free public transport to ease household costs during Khmer New Year, spokesman Pen Bona said Monday, as the country grapples with rising global energy prices and border tensions with Thailand.
Bona told reporters the measures aim to cushion citizens against an energy crisis linked to Middle East instability while Cambodia pursues diplomatic efforts to defend its territorial integrity.
Fuel import duties have been cut to zero, with special and value-added taxes on petrol and diesel reduced. The state subsidy on fuel remains in place, with additional support triggered when global prices breach set thresholds.
Bona said the policies cost around $50 million in monthly revenue but pledged continued support if needed.
Electricité du Cambodge has absorbed losses to keep tariffs stable, while 600 buses have been deployed nationwide to provide free travel during the holiday.
Civil servants and armed forces received allowances and early salary payments ahead of celebrations.
“These measures reflect the resilience of Cambodia’s economy and the government’s commitment to support citizens despite financial pressures,” Bona said, extending New Year wishes for health and prosperity.
