PHNOM PENH, April 18, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s government says millions of people continued to take part in Khmer New Year celebrations across the country even after the official three-day holiday ended, underscoring what officials described as a strong message of national unity.

Government spokesman Pen Bona said on Saturday that festive activities were still drawing crowds in Phnom Penh and the provinces, reflecting “enduring national joy and cohesion.”

He noted that the response followed appeals from national leaders, including Acting Head of State Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet, urging citizens to remain resilient and united.

Tourism ministry figures showed more than 21 million visits nationwide between April 14 and 16, with over 70,000 foreign tourists joining the festivities.

Bona said the turnout demonstrated widespread public engagement and dismissed what he called failed attempts by opposition groups to disrupt the holiday.

Prime Minister Hun Manet thanked local authorities, security forces, and volunteers for ensuring safety during the celebrations.

He highlighted cultural events such as Angkor Sankranta as key to promoting Cambodian identity and boosting tourism.

Officials said the government supported the holiday with measures including 600 free public buses in Phnom Penh and inter-provincial routes, alongside fuel price stabilisation through tax cuts and subsidies.

Authorities described these steps as part of broader efforts to maintain stability and reinforce national solidarity during major public occasions.
