Cambodia to Provide Free Buses for Khmer New Year Travel

PHNOM PENH, March 9, 2026 (KPT) — Phnom Penh authorities will offer six days of free public bus services during the Khmer New Year holiday, officials announced Sunday.
The capital administration said 600 buses will operate without charge from April 12 to 17 to help residents return to their home provinces. The measure follows guidance from Prime Minister Hun Manet during a meeting last week.
Officials said the initiative aims to ease travel costs for workers and families celebrating the traditional festival.
Of the fleet, 100 buses will run within Phnom Penh and on the express route to Techo International Airport, while 500 will serve provincial routes nationwide.
Passengers will also receive free drinking water during the journeys. The city urged transport companies to keep fares unchanged during the holiday period, saying the cooperation would help reduce financial pressure on citizens.
Authorities encouraged workers and the public to use the free services to travel safely and reunite with their families during the celebrations.
