Cambodia reiterates ceasefire commitment during visit by foreign military attachés

BANTEAY MEANCHEY, Cambodia, March 5 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence said Wednesday it had facilitated a visit by foreign military attachés to border areas with Thailand affected by recent clashes.

Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, the ministry’s spokesperson, said the delegation inspected the Boeung Trakuan Pass and a site of unexploded ordnance in Thmar Puok district, Banteay Meanchey province.

The ministry alleged the area was heavily attacked by Thai forces in December 2025, causing damage to homes, shops and public infrastructure. It also claimed Thai troops had laid barbed wire and installed shipping containers.

The delegation reviewed the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, which took effect on December 27, 2025.

The Cambodian government said it remained committed to implementing agreements reached between the two countries, including the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee signed on December 27, 2025, and the Peace Agreement of October 26, 2025.

It said the aim was to restore stability and long-term security along the shared frontier.

Separately, the ministry said military attachés from 12 countries visited displaced Cambodians sheltering at Kandaol Pagoda in Thmar Puok district.

According to the ministry, 1,632 families – about 5,000 people – remain unable to return home due to what it described as the occupation of Cambodian territory and the presence of military installations. Many homes were reported destroyed.

Socheata said Cambodia continued to adhere to the ceasefire and bilateral agreements, and reaffirmed its position that the border is based on historical treaties and international legal principles, including uti possidetis juris.

The government said it did not recognise any border changes resulting from the use of force. Following the visit, the delegation expressed hope that peace and normalcy would soon be restored, allowing displaced residents to return home, the ministry added.
