PHNOM PENH, Feb 24, 2026 (KPT) – Japan’s deputy ambassador to Cambodia, Matsuda Junsaku, has commended the Cambodian government for its attention to the welfare of refugees amid ongoing border tensions with Thailand.

Speaking after visiting refugee sites at Wat Chansey and Wat Kandal in Banteay Meanchey province on Thursday, Matsuda said it was important for countries, including Japan, to witness conditions on the ground.

He noted that Cambodia had shown “great care” through the provision of food and maintenance of sanitary facilities at the camps.

Matsuda said Japan would continue humanitarian assistance and coordinate with ASEAN partners to support ceasefire mechanisms and de escalation efforts.

He highlighted Japan’s backing for the ASEAN Observation Team (AOT), describing it as playing a “crucial role” in monitoring the ceasefire.

The diplomat reaffirmed Tokyo’s commitment to ongoing consultations with Cambodia and Thailand to reduce tensions.

He added that reports from his visit would be sent to Tokyo to explore further support.
According to Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior, more than 60,000 people remained in refugee camps as of February 22.

Phnom Penh has lodged repeated protests against Thai actions, including the construction of container sites and destruction of civilian homes after the December 27 ceasefire.
