Philippines Ready to Lead ASEAN Observer Team on Cambodia–Thailand Border

PHNOM PENH, Feb 12, 2026 (KPT) – The Philippines said it is prepared to continue leading the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to help facilitate a peaceful resolution to the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute.

The pledge was made during a meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and General Romeo S. Brawner Jr., Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh on Thursday.

General Brawner said Manila had been closely monitoring developments along the border and stood ready to lead the AOT impartially, supporting efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability for both countries and the wider region.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening military-to-military cooperation with Cambodia, citing long-standing ties between the two armed forces.

Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed the Philippine delegation and expressed appreciation for growing defence cooperation, particularly in experience-sharing and capacity-building.

He said Cambodia remained committed to resolving border issues peacefully, in line with bilateral agreements, treaties and international law.

Hun Manet voiced confidence in the ASEAN Observer Team’s role and expressed hope that, under Philippine leadership as ASEAN Chair, the mechanism would continue to support dialogue and de-escalation.

The ASEAN Observer Team was established to monitor and ease tensions along disputed border areas between Cambodia and Thailand.
