Phnom Penh, Cambodia (Oct.28, 2025) — Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni is scheduled to make a state visit to Hungary in January 2026, the Cambodian National Assembly announced Oct. 28.

The announcement followed a visit to Hungary by Cambodian National Assembly President Khuon Sudary. During her meeting with Hungarian National Assembly Speaker László Kövér, he described the two countries’ friendship as “deeply rooted and enduring.”

Kövér noted that 2026 will mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Hungary, calling the king’s upcoming visit a milestone in bilateral ties.

Hungary is considered one of Cambodia’s closest European partners, with relations dating back to 1956. It was among the first five countries to recognize the People’s Republic of Kampuchea in 1979 following the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime. In 1992, Hungary contributed peacekeepers to support Cambodia’s post-conflict recovery.

In recent years, Hungary has supported Cambodia on the European Union’s Everything But Arms (EBA) trade initiative and has regularly offered scholarships to Cambodian students.

Marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties, former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen described the relationship as one built on “mutual trust and close cooperation.”
