Japanese Consumer Goods Giant Lion Eyes Cambodia for New Plant

PHNOM PENH, July 14, 2026 (KPT) – Japanese consumer goods giant Lion Corporation is weighing plans to build a manufacturing plant in Cambodia, officials said Tuesday, in a move that could expand its ASEAN production network and bolster the Kingdom’s appeal to Japanese investors.

Chea Vuthy, secretary general of the Cambodian Investment Board under the Council for the Development of Cambodia, met a delegation led by Takenobu Yamamoto, director of Lion’s international business division, to discuss the proposal.

Lion said it would conduct a detailed feasibility study on establishing a facility in Cambodia, citing strong investment potential and a favorable business climate. The company already operates manufacturing bases in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, and is now evaluating Cambodia as a possible addition to its regional network.

Founded in 1891, Lion is one of Japan’s leading producers of personal care and hygiene goods, including shampoo, laundry detergent, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Its expansion into Cambodia would mark a significant step in diversifying production and strengthening supply chains across Southeast Asia.

Vuthy welcomed the interest, stressing government efforts to improve infrastructure, streamline regulations and support private sector growth. He said the Royal Government of Cambodia was committed to enhancing competitiveness amid global economic uncertainties.

The CDC encouraged Lion to expedite its investment decision and consider locating in one of Cambodia’s special economic zones, which offer ready infrastructure, logistics connectivity and incentives for manufacturers seeking to establish operations in the Kingdom.
