Lee Jae-myung and Hun Manet highlight joint crackdown on online scams

PHNOM PENH, 14 February 2026 (KPT) – The leaders of South Korea and Cambodia have underscored growing cooperation between their governments in tackling transnational crime, particularly online scams.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said on Friday that a joint task force established with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet had already delivered “remarkable results.”

According to Lee, the Cambodia–Korea Joint Task Force arrested more than 130 suspects linked to online scam operations within two months of its formation.

He credited the outcome to close coordination between South Korean and Cambodian police, as well as what he described as the Cambodian government’s strong commitment to combating cross-border crime.

Lee also noted that the South Korean embassy in Phnom Penh had provided tteok-guk, a traditional Lunar New Year rice-cake soup, to members of the task force as a gesture of encouragement during the holiday period.

Hun Manet, in a message posted on social media, welcomed Lee’s remarks and described the cooperation between the two governments as “close and effective.”

He reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to fighting and eradicating transnational crime, including online scams and other cyber-enabled offences that pose threats to public security.

“Transnational crimes are complex and borderless challenges that no single country can effectively address alone,” Hun said, adding that enhanced regional and international cooperation was essential.

Both leaders expressed confidence that the joint task force would continue to deliver results as part of broader efforts to strengthen security cooperation between South Korea and Cambodia.
