Cambodia Urges Good-Faith Ceasefire, Praises China’s Mediation in Border Talks

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 30, 2025) — Cambodia has reaffirmed that the full and sincere implementation of a ceasefire is its immediate priority in easing tensions along the border with Thailand, while praising China’s role in facilitating dialogue between the two countries.
The message followed trilateral talks hosted by China on Dec. 29 at Fuxian Lake in Yunnan province, bringing together foreign ministers and senior military officials from Cambodia, Thailand and China. It marked the third China-led effort to address the border dispute.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn expressed appreciation for China’s mediation, citing what he described as the decisive leadership and personal involvement of President Xi Jinping in promoting dialogue that contributed to the ceasefire and the outcome of the recent Special General Border Committee meeting.
Prak Sokhonn said the priority was the ceasefire’s “full and effective implementation in good faith and sincerity” to ensure it endures, stressing that this was essential for de-escalation, trust-building and a return to normal life in affected border areas.
He also called for the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers still in custody and the safe return of displaced civilians.
Looking ahead, Sokhonn urged strict adherence to existing treaties and agreements, early convening of the Joint Boundary Commission to resume demarcation work, and stronger confidence-building measures through regular military and diplomatic communication.
He also emphasized a reinforced role for the ASEAN Observer Team. On the sidelines of the trilateral talks, Sokhonn met separately with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, with both sides pledging to strengthen Cambodia–China relations. China announced emergency relief worth 20 million yuan for Cambodians displaced by the conflict.
Sokhonn also met Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to the ceasefire and to maintaining peace and stability along the border.
