Cambodia Reaffirms Commitment to Peaceful Resolution of Border Disputes with Thailand

PHNOM PENH, June 8, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has reiterated its commitment to resolving maritime and land border disputes with Thailand through peaceful and legal mechanisms, government spokesman Pen Bona said Monday.
On land border issues, Bona said Cambodia continued to respect existing agreements and remained committed to resolving disputes through established bilateral mechanisms.
He noted the ceasefire and provisions of the Joint Statement issued on December 27, 2025, were being implemented to support a peaceful settlement and promote long‑term stability along the frontier.
The Joint Boundary Commission will continue survey and demarcation work in line with existing agreements.
Bona highlighted Point 3 of the Joint Statement, which affirms the agreement does not prejudice delimitation of the international boundary and calls for accelerated survey work, protection of teams from landmines and prioritisation of demarcation in civilian areas.
On maritime issues, Bona said Cambodia initiated compulsory conciliation under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea on June 2, 2026, after Thailand’s unilateral withdrawal from the 2001 MoU — described by Phnom Penh as the only bilateral framework for peaceful resolution.
He said Cambodia reviewed all peaceful and legal options before pursuing conciliation, expressing hope the process would underscore the importance of international law and contribute to a fair and lasting solution for regional peace and stability.
