Cambodia Reiterates Commitment to Protect Territory and Citizens

PHNOM PENH, March 9, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and supporting citizens affected by border tensions, government spokesman Pen Bona said Monday.

Quoting Prime Minister Hun Manet, Bona said: “Protecting the integrity of the territory and the people is the highest priority of the Royal Government.” He stressed that Cambodia remains committed to resolving disputes peacefully and in line with international law.

A delegation led by Keo Remy attended the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva earlier this month, meeting UN officials, special rapporteurs and diplomats to discuss human rights concerns, including housing rights and civilian protection.

Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn also addressed the session, saying human rights cannot flourish without peace and security.

Authorities said 93 percent of more than 64,000 displaced people have returned home, while 45,000 remain in temporary shelters with government assistance.

Officials added that ministries and local authorities are helping residents rebuild livelihoods.

The government reiterated respect for the December 2025 ceasefire and stressed Cambodia’s border position is based on legal principles, historical treaties and official maps, rejecting any changes imposed by force.
