Cambodian Senate Condemns “Offensive Act” Against Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Urges Calm Amid Tensions

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct.08,2025) — Cambodia’s Senate has condemned what it described as a “disrespectful” act targeting former Prime Minister and current Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen, calling it a serious affront to human dignity and a setback to regional diplomacy.

In a statement released this week, the Senate expressed “deep regret and strongest condemnation” over the unspecified incident, which it said also involved other Cambodian dignitaries. While details were not disclosed, the Senate said the act undermined principles of mutual respect and good neighborliness between Cambodia and Thailand.

The statement comes amid rising tensions between the two ASEAN neighbors, following the postponement of high-level border talks and growing concerns over sovereignty and regional cooperation.

Despite the incident, the Senate praised Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s “wise, restrained and statesmanlike” response, commending his call for calm and urging Cambodians not to retaliate. The statement described his conduct as demonstrating “noble character and moral integrity.”

The Senate also echoed Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s recent push for economic independence, including increased use of the national currency and reduced reliance on foreign financial systems.

It called on the Thai government to take “appropriate measures” to address the matter and prevent similar incidents, urging both countries to uphold mutual respect, equality and peaceful coexistence.

Cambodia and Thailand share close trade and cultural ties but have experienced periodic diplomatic flare-ups.
