Cambodia, Japan reaffirm strategic partnership during envoy’s farewell

PHNOM PENH, July 14, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and Japan have reaffirmed their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during a farewell meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and outgoing Japanese ambassador Ueno Atsushi, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Prak Sokhonn received Ueno on July 13 at the ministry, congratulating him on the completion of his tenure and thanking him for his role in advancing bilateral ties. He cited progress in political, economic, defence and educational cooperation, as well as people‑to‑people exchanges.

The minister praised Japan’s Official Development Assistance projects and Ueno’s efforts in facilitating high‑level visits, including Prime Minister Hun Manet’s official trip to Tokyo in May 2025. He said the ambassador’s tenure had helped deepen trust and broaden cooperation across multiple sectors.

Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international developments, agreeing that the partnership should expand into new areas to benefit both countries. Sokhonn stressed that Cambodia valued Japan’s role as a reliable partner in supporting peace, stability and development in the region.

Ueno said he was pleased to witness Cambodia’s socio‑economic and diplomatic progress despite global challenges, noting improvements in infrastructure and international engagement. He expressed gratitude for the ministry’s support and cooperation throughout his posting.

The Cambodian foreign minister also briefed Ueno on recent tensions along the Cambodia‑Thailand border, highlighting humanitarian concerns.

He expressed appreciation for Japan’s assistance to displaced Cambodians. Ueno pledged that Tokyo would continue to monitor the situation closely and stood ready to support peaceful efforts to resolve the dispute and improve relations between Cambodia and Thailand.
